My type 4 engine build...based on AP 1800

  1. Remember...this is my first time of doing most of this stuff, so there could be easier/better ways!

  2. After doing this on all 8 lifters, I prepped the tubes. Again, all brand new ones and I fitted all new seals
    [IMG]

I then fitted the lifters, putting lube on the faces
    [IMG]

and fitted the tubes after putting a little RTV on the seals
    [IMG]

Now...those of you with good eyes (can't be many now :p) will notice a slight problem on a few of the tubes. If not, heres a better view

Holy moly batman....that's not gonna seal well! There were 3 like this so I removed them all and measured them. This was what I found
    [IMG]

I difference of just over 5mm on 3 of the tubes! So, a quick call to Coolair where they came from, turns out they've jsut discovered a faulty batch and are in touch with the supplier to sort it. Sent mine back and they replaced them stright away

Just goes to show though that you need to check as I could easily have missed that.

  3. Then I installed the rods, putting lube on both ends, then the rockers and wongy wire thing
    [IMG]

You need to make sure the rods are bang in the middle as you can actually still install the rockers if they aren't. And make sure that retaining wire is sitting inside the tubes properly and touching the rods

  4. Forgot to mention you should back off all the adjusters before installing as you've not set the heights yet.

  5. I then set the adjusters, initially to just touch each valve at the right time so I could rotate the engine and be happy there were no issues, then I reset them all but this time 2 turns in once touching (remember this is hyd lifters only!)
next I fitted the oil filter housing, using sealer between the gasket and faces
    [IMG]

Then fitted the new oil cooler ensuring that the seals seated properly during fitting
    [IMG]

    Then the filler tube

with my dodgy eyesight, I think we are at the same stages in the rebuilds! We have #1/#2 heads fitted, pushrods/tubes fitted, rockers all built up and valve clearance's set whilst #3/#4 is tonights to do list :D

  7. Are those push rod wires correctly located?

It looks like they are close to the pushrod..could do with being a touch further down.

Ill snap a couple of pics showing how mine are located..will post tonight :D

  9. should locate on the push rod tube - not the rod:

  10. @alpha981 Remember I said first time doing this......:)

I thought the wire was to ensure a rod didn't slip down if the adjustment became slack, potentially forcing a valve further out if the rod got caught between the lifter and the edge of the rocker foot! Still learning....will move the wire tonight

  11. hey no worries - they keep pressure on the tubes to stop them from popping back out of the head - but I see your logic. I love seeing others build though so keep up with the pics!

Ive just noticed, you guys have wavy washers and a spacer on your rocker assemblies - Ive got springs to keep them apart!

  13. Thats not mine just a photo I robbed to show the location - I also have springs on my set up... they usually try and fling themselves apart before you can get them back onto the studs so I've adopted a one handed approach to holding it all together with thumb and little finger at each end while I use the other hand to rotate the various parts to push it all over these studs...

@paulandchez can you do me a favour please?

Whats the longest length' pushrod tube you have - we have got some short ones too; good job you pointed this issue out, we didn't look!

Ours vary from 205mm up to 208.58mm!

@Paul Weeding any thoughts on the correct length please :)

  15. Both are correct... They removed the springs on later engines

  16. That's because they're the ones off my CU engine. The ones that came with the AP are same as yours

  17. I'll measure them later and let you know. I've got an old one that I matched them all against so i'll measure that

Brilliant, I am four short - in fairness, VWH said there would be no problem exchanging them!

    Thanks for measuring one :hattip:
