Oil leak type4 engine

I have an annoying leak from this oil heater it leaks through the bolt holes. I have copper crush washers on but it still leaks, I don't want to over tighten the bolts as I've herd the thread won't take much torque so only done by hand till I feel a good enough bite I can't find a setting anywhere for it I assume it would be the same as a oil strainer?
Any ideas on how to stop it, or if I removed it, what would I replace it with?[IMG]

The leak will be to do with it sealing onto the engine block, two bolts make it look thats a connection cover rather than something squashing a gasket onto the engine block.
Take the bolts out. If it doesnt fall off or gush oil, remove the cover.

Theres probably (edited) one big bolt for compressing the gasket under the cover, and a gasket between the heater and the engine block that needs re making.

Could you swap all that out for a different std type 4 cover plate?

I took the bolts out one at a time yesterday to put copper washers on but as soon as the bolt comes out oil gushed out the hole I had to plug it with my finger whilst I put the washer on.

  7. Just use dome nuts and anneal the washers

  8. So removing the oil drain plug caused oil to gush out ;)?

It's not a drain plug it's a heater element to heat the oil.

    You could try doughty washers.

  13. You could try cleaning them up
And using some hydraulic thread sealer on the bolts as an extra barrier  IMG_0100.jpeg

  16. How does it work? I'm guessing it's some external heater that warms up the oil to get you going on cold mornings.

The heater plate should bolt on with the big bolt that the stock plate uses. Those bolts may have clear tapped passages through to the other side of the assembly , but I think you are chickening out too soon.
Find a couple of degreased screws the same as the rwo screws. Coat the tips of them in e.g. Hylomar Blue sealant and screw it into each of the holes immediately after removing the original screws. The sealant should seal the thread, but really everything needs to be clean..

From looking at the photo there appears to be three more holes equidistantly spaced on the heater thingy. What are these for? I would have thought that the three holes, if fitted with bolts, would hold the plate more evenly than the two opposing ones.

I've never removed the plate/heater, so I no idea what's behind it, but looking at this type4 engine block, there's no central bolt.[IMG]

The central bolt you refer to goes on the strainer which is the larger orifice next to the drain plug, roughly about the centre. Thats the one which needs 9lbf tightening torque and sets thesamba guys all twitchy.

In the picture ^ it shows a smaller cover plate with two hex head bolts, that is some form of inspection plate (of which I cannot remember what it does). Two separate things!
