Oil leak type4 engine

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by iblaze, Apr 3, 2024.

  1. yep coudl be crankshaft seal if its coming down between engine and gearbox

valve cover seals, pushrod seals, dipstick tube seal, oil pressure switch seal, rear main seal are all common leak points on a type4.

The OP said the leak was at the back of the engine and moustache bar.

When I had the engine out I replaced the one between the engine and gearbox but I didn't do the pully one I can't remember why I didn't as I had the fan off. Does it require anything special to get at it?

If it’s the seal and O ring behind the fan, it’s not particularly difficult, assuming the fan hub will come off.

The available UK supply is not good, they swell up and leak. Every so often there's a group buy from the states of good 'uns. By the time mine arrived I'd made something from fuel pipe(s).

Ah I couldn't get the hub off does it require a puller?

Yes and the fact that yours didn't come off in your hand (ooer missus) is a good sign.

Have a look at my “another engine drop “ thread…. lots of suggestions on there…but yes, some sort of puller is needed.

The usual "puller" is use the 3 bolt holes/bolts against a thick horseshoe plate behind. Or whatever you can russle up.

Good method, i did that ...go evenly round and it comes off . Its on a taper if i remember .

  13. ^^ using a puller will more than likely stuff the thread in the end of the crank shaft. Then you will be....shafted

You are right Mick ....how many times have seen that happen on here certainly a few .

So just a horseshoe shaped plate and wind bolts in slowly till it jumps off.
Don't know if this is a daft question but how do you get it back on and not fall off?

In theory yes, mine had insufficient gap behind to fit anything….hope you have more luck.
Fitting is just a case of tightening bolt, the taper takes care of the rest.

  17. Yep. Just any bits of steel. As thick as you can to spread the load against the case. O ring on crank, then new seal and wind the fan hub back on (as long as it does not have a groove in it)

Its on a taper, the central bolt pulls the taper together which locks it back in place, either partly cold welded with clean metal, or eventually glued by expanding rust..

Just torque it back up , think it has a woodruff key if i remember . the taper on it will probably whistle clean being so tight on . if oil has been leaking from their badly you will know about it as the fan will spin oil all round the first bits of the fan shroud .

Not had time to check it properly yet as the wife's dad has gone in hospital and it's 180 mile round trip for visits.
I've been reading through @Betty the Bay oil leak thread and there's no sign of oil on my fan so going to check dipstick and oil filler as @Zed suggested.
It doesn't leak just sat on the drive only after a run oil is present.
