I keep seeing pictures of post 1973 buses with these plates on and they certainly look a lot better than the modern ones. I fancy changing mine as they're quite tatty but am worried about getting nicked. Has anyone got experience of this, or does plod normally leave us alone?

  2. You should be fine but all bays would have had the yellow and white ones with the raised letters ,it was 73 was when it was made compulsery but new vehicles from the late 60's would have had the yellow reflective ones.

  3. And will fail it's MOT :(

  4. It's a weird one... Technically yes you will get a fine but it rarely happens , and many MOT stations won't bat an eye lid. As a rule of thumb, if it looks period and correct to anyone but anoraks then you should be fine. Obviously sticking a black and silver or yellow raised metal plate on a brand new Audi you are going to get a pull.
I have a '71 Mini Cooper S I hill climb and sprint, it has a horizontal sticky black horizontal front number plate on the bonnet, no body bats an eyelid. Mot or even the occupants of a Police Traffic BMW I did a kids charity day at Donnington Park in. They just wanted to know why the hell their traffic car could not not catch it on the track and could they have a ride in it before the end.... :)
Also I gave a kit car which is a loose replica of a '59 Lola MK1a Le Mans car, is registered as 2003 but has been MOT' 3 times with a black rear number plate and NO front number plate !!!!! ( ruins the lines... Fell off officer?? ) Get away with it because the plate is not obviously the wrong colour. Long and the short is as long as you put a plate on which is the legal size and a legal font for sonething, I don't think you would get a problem on an old bus, as at a glance most won't know and unless you are doing donuts in NcDonalds car park the Police have better things to do!

  5. Yes that's correct but forewarned etc lol I work with some anoraks who "love the power". Always cool blinds most idiots though

But these are better for your year van, alot less worrying, still pressed steel and look way better than plastic euro ones

  9. I did hear a rumour that the number plates were going to go the same route as historic vehicle tax - rolling 40 years plus however my local number plate would have none of it so I got standard plates for my historic taxed 1st Jan 74 Westy.

  10. I've stuck black and silver plates on mine when it shouldn't (74)
    I've never had any bother

Its unlikely to fail its MOT.
    You're unlikely to get pulled.
    Do what you want.

  13. sorry to be a miserable git but was just pointing out a fact  would be a right pain in the arse failing your MOT just because you had the wrong plates on.:( Used to know of a 1988 Ford Orion Ghia black with blacked out windows and black number plates, very cool. Up until a few years ago there was no provision in the MOT to fail a vehicle for having a colour other than yellow or white as a backing for your plate ie you could have the front on the back and vice versa how stupid was that but they could still fail it for white/silver on black. As others say on here do what you want just be ready for any consequence. I can drive around all day with bald tyres and not get pulled by the old bill still illegal.

Anyway Old style plates still look fantastic on the right vehicle so thumbs up to bending the rules :D

 didn't take it as being a miserable git!! Best part about it is Craig, one of our neighbours works for CID in Notts police whilst his wife works at the main HQ, both of them love the westy! Hes had a good look round it lots of times :D I do carry the correct colour plates under the seat (should I get stopped)!

  15. That's okay Mark no offence taken:thumbsup: it's a funny old world we live in though. Plates under seats best way. I drove around with a bald tyre for months but made sure I had a perfectly legal one in the boot just in case I should get stopped .

Some people call me a pessimist but I just like to think I am an optimist with experience :hattip:

  18.

    Live and let live:)

  19. If you were running a bald tyre but had a legal one in the boot why didnt you just get the legal one fitted?

Wrong plates wont kill anyone but a bald tyre has the chance to???????????
