  2. Got the black and silvers on a 78 and they the look the nads, got the correct ones under the bed and plod has got better things to do. My MOT fella also thinks the same, who cares...

That is exactly what I do. Not only that but I failed the mot on them every year.

The first year the garage phoned me up and asked if I had the proper ones. I popped down and fitted them there and then and got the pass.
The mot man explained that VOSA are able to sit outside a garage, access the garages mot program and get real time information about any mot. If they want they can take a vehicle fresh from an mot and give it another mot to check the original inspectors work.
He suggested that I keep the proper plates in the van and explain, if I'm stopped by plod, that I've forgot to put them back on after after a show somewhere.

I have never had trouble with the police in 8 years driving, I've even had two coppers taking their photos beside the van and neither of them mentioned the number plates.

  5. So just out of curiosity, what's period correct for my 79? Obviously yellow & white, but would it be pressed, raised letters or the more modern plastic reflective? I'm afraid I'm with Ricky & Bernard on this one but each to their own...

when i was younger and i wanted fancy wheels on my car my grandad used to say "why? you can't see them from the drivers seat" same applies to plates really doesn't it? recently i've stopped caring about how things look for other people and am becoming more practical, i really couldn't be arsed changing them over and carrying round spare sets, if i was gonna do it then i'd know the "risk" and think sod it.

I love the fact that not only do black plates look thousands of times better than the crappy yellow ones but also that the only people it annoys are the ones who are too nervous to deliberately break the law themselves.

printed plastic with pre 2001 font had come in by the time you're asking but aluminium and raised letters would equally be ok as would solid aluminium stamped. Make sure the font is correct though. (there wasn't an actual single font pre 2001 but the letters had to be spaced correctly - a common font was called charles wright 1935 i think)

    You're a very naughty boy.

  11. Cheers @rickyrooo1 The framptons riveted ones that somebody posted a link to look correct but I always struggle to find a correct looking stamped one, not that I need em just yet but the originals are knackered.

  12. This is nearly like stock v lowered debate, each to their own, it's not harming anyone

  16. No, but it's bloody good fun arguing the toss about something so irrelevant.

    This is not true

    See above

'79 is a brilliant year, you can have the plastic riveted on or the alloy pressed and if you can still find them it's one of only a few years where you could have alloy pressed in the Serck font.

  17. Think they look very silly , they're meant to be on really old vehicles not bay window vans, and believe me I have no problem with breaking the law

  18. I've got these Framptons riveted ones and I think they look great on my '76 :)

I'm feeling a tad embarrassed that I asked now. Shall we discuss oil instead :)
