  1. It’s tempting to apply too much pressure in an effort for progress - think that’s how I burnt my £25 faux-dremel.

Will what’s left of the rust not be rendered inert anyway, as it will be painted, and so starved of oxygen & water?

  2. I’ll never be able to completely rid it of corrosion
There’s always some bits left in the bottom of pits.
I just want to get rid of as much as possible to help in the fight against it bubbling back up.
I’ll be using hammerite no1 rust buster primer before top coat as I’ve had good success with it over many years with different things
Plus the top coat paint I’m using contains zinc as well.

I’m not a fan of any of those treatments that turn black

I'm curious as to why Para. You've done your research I know.
We stock Fertan at the marina here and I have to say it seems pretty good, but maybe not so..
The manufacturer claims a layer of zinc phosphate is laid down but it doesn't remove loose material, so that still has to be done. Surely anything that stops or at least reduces the reaction can't be bad as a base layer to prime, undercoat and paint?

  4. I’ve found corrosion always breaks through to the surface after a while when using that type.
I’m just not a fan after trying various ones over the years

Mmm. I guess theres nothing like bright, fresh metal.

  6. This is what I’ve had good success with over the years on pitted and corroded steel.
It’s high build so fills in and helps level off the pitting and once cured sands nicely without clogging the paper or balling up.

I think the trick is if you paint over rust it has to be very dry. Not just dry on the surface but deep down dry. And get a lot of top coats over it so it stays dry. I hate rust and have never found a way to stop it coming back other than totally removing it with grinding type tools and filing the holes...

I've noticed the pro boat painters here bare metal the boat and do their best with wire brush on grinder on the worst bits but then they just paint it. Only if say the roof is really, really bad do they apply any converter.

Yeah I agree. When ours was painted 10 years ago it was bare metalled etc etc.
There are a couple of patches on the roof that now need attention under the antislip unfortunately.
My point was that i think there is a place for the converters, but there also has to be acceptance that unless the metal is good then there are limitations.
I use it on the swan neck, for protecting the tiller mounting boss which is unpainted. It wouldn't last forever but it does a winter without paint or any further corrosion.
We've just had all the deck board u channel replaced on the semi trad stern because the ends had rotted out. They were painted previously as well. I hate rust!

It's not a great environment to avoid rot of one sort or another is it! My neighbour just replaced his deck boards too for the same reason.
My tiller bearing needs replacing. I watched someone else do his and he dropped his rudder in - it took a lot of magnets and boat hooking to retrieve it but it was a laugh too! I don't want to do that though. A job for ...later - it's a sealed bearing but it's rotted and water got in. My grease gun wouldn't go over the nipple - I've sorted that but too late. We still have another section of rust to hack and treat but the summer days are all but over. Not sure we'll get it done this year.

  10. Back down to the workshop again today
    Arrived to this

    Cleaned it up to this

I then tried going over it with a scotchbrite
Wheel on the dremmel but it didn’t touch it.
It looks like im past the powdery lighter brown corrosion and down to the black tough stuff.

So I gave it a going over with a wire wheel on the drill
    To be left with this
    [IMG]

I then coated it gel again let it sit for an hour
Then with a scotchbright pad soaked in gel I gave it all a good scrubbing
    Then cleaned it all off
Applied a fresh layer and covered it in clingfilm.

I also put some more lighting in the gazebo
Which has improved things a lot

It feels like im in a film like ET or close encounters working in there now[IMG]

I would have liked to give the gel another go or two
However my youngest daughter has caught COVID and even though I’ve tested negative this morning
I can’t imagine it being long before I come down with it and I don’t fancy having to leave either the gel or bare metal for over ten days.

So I wire wheeled it all the best I could
Maybe a bit too enthusiastically as I’ve burnt the paint off the back

So as it’s likely the van will have to be left for a while I’ve given it a coat of hammerite no1 rust beater.

Why don’t you isolate your daughter, we did that with our son and also gave him a box of wipes to wipe everything he touched, door handles etc. Isolated to his room, took dinners up to him etc etc.

2 weeks we did this for and no one else caught it.

Same as my niece. Isolating in her room. No one else has caught it.
