all this talk of type 4 engines flaps and stuff missing where should the flaps be and can anything be seen of them with engine in the bus i ve got what looks like top tin i think i ve got in between tin (around cylinders ) but i ve got no bottom tin but i think thats normal is it i ll try n get some pics in the morning
Major hasnt got the linkages for the flaps from what I can tell (there is no linkage rods coming out the top of the engine) but it is running a remote oil cooler, not that it makes up for the lack of them.
There should be tin underneath between the heat exchangers and the engine to control cooling underneath
this is the bottom tin that is usually missing on vans due to rust or j-tubes, there was loads of posts in a thread i did ages ago about thermostats etc it would be good to have it all in one place to check, there is a rod that operates the flaps on the top of the engine, chances are if you ain't got the rod the flaps ain't there, i've got no thermosta no rod and no bottom tin due to j's i'm guessing the flaps are open in the failsafe or not there but i don't really know how to check that.
yep i don’t have them but thats normal init it just made me think when i saw ed china playing with his flaps on that ropey porsche last week
Mine doesn't have them either. A few from the States I've seen with fuel injection don't have it either. I'm still on the look out for a T4 Injected engine to have them. Someone tell me (apart from Rickyroo ) their bus has them.
what is it with the crazy americans that make them think they can improve a design by removing parts of it....... it does seem a trait of the yank vans to have been raped of parts.
yep my fuel injected baby does too , If it was my engine i wouldn`t risk running it with out all the cooling flaps . If your missing the long operating bar i`m pretty sure your flaps will be missing to , It was all there for good reason and just by saying `oh loads don`t have this` or `its been like that for years ` . All my own opinion but these bits are not that hard to source and cheaper in the long run
I am not worried about the bottom tins I can probably make some of them I don't think the thermostats there either and not to worried about (I know this makes me a bad person and I will burn in hell) But would like to know if the flaps are there and in the right position so where should I be looking ? And they should be open ? Yes ?
i think you need to look under the top tin as the flaps and rod direct air over the oil cooler, i'm sure joker or zed told me if the rod and stat was off then basically the flaps would quite possibly be there but in failsafe (open full airflow to the top of the oil cooler) the only bad thing about this is the engine runs cooler from start up which increases wear. please get this confirmed though as i may have read it wrong, i'd be very greatful too if someone did an idiots guide of where to look and see if the flaps are on etc.
Well there's no shortage of idiots on Here lol just need someone to write the guide With Pictures I blame ed china when I saw his flaps going up and down
i know people have occasionally posted the official drawings of how it should look but i agree lowie, i would welcome a photo guide of how it goes and what to look at etc, surely one of the guys with a type 4 on the bench could put a few pictures up? i think there are actually 2 flaps on the rod offset so the air from the fan is directed to the cooler, i also can't belive so many americans thought this modification was a good idea, i wonder why it was done? do you think they just had a failed stat and removed? seems extreme as i thought they failed open, sonewhere in america a man has a basement full of type 4 flaps.
is the setup similar on a type1 i have twincarbs on mine with a doghouse shroud but no thermostat but i want to get onw fitted if posible
