  1. Everything you should need to know, and must know, about type 4 thermostats is to be found here. http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Thermostats.html Ignore it at your own expense.
Its also worth knowing that type 1 egines run a lot cooler than type 4's so better fit the right thermostat.

  2. Cheers I ll have proper read later

  9. Now this has got me thinking.
I've not got any flaps on mine and now is wondering which way they are flapped. Engine always smells warm.
I'm lookin into fitting an oil cooler to mine.
Fitting the cooler under the body somewhere.

  10. What! No flaps and no oil cooler? No wonder its hot. After a 3 hour drive at 60/70 the top half of my engine is just nice and warm. I have flaps, working thermostat and oil cooler.

  11. Sorry I worded that wrong.
I ment I'm going to fit a remote oil cooler too as an extra.
It's got the original oil cooler after a long drive the dipper stick is hot but not too hot to handle.
But my 2.0 T4 engine is fitted in a split screen so the rear vents ain't that big.

  12. Thsat explains that then. Perhaps a fan to aid the vents might be a good idea, as they were designed for a less demandiing engine. Do you have heat exchnages on it. They also aid cooling in a type 4 by cooling the exhaust.

  13. I have a type 4 1.8 with carbs, and it has all it's flaps. Was missing the flaps which are operated by the thermostat. Managed to source the missing parts off eBay last winter, so everything running as stock.
After a long run at 65/70 mph the dipstick is warm, but not too hot to touch, which is how it should be :) I've got a few photos if required

  14. Flaps, flanges....I give up ::)

  15. there is a spring on the operating bar which if the thermostat or cable fails pulls the flaps in to the failsfe position . No bar = no spring = not in the fail safe position

  16. i had a check tonight there's a bar a spring, connected correctly so in the fail safe position

  17.
  18. i read it earlier on ratwell and another site.
The engine has been in the van for the last 10 yrs ish ok, think im getting paranoid.
