i had a check tonight there's a bar a spring, connected correctly so in the fail safe position

Is that true on a type 4 engine?

Apparently so. If the thermostat fails the spring forces the flaps open. I've read that somewhere on one of the engine books ages ago.

It's a very good system but I'm still personally not too fussed for my own bus. I have no idea how long it's been missing from my engine and I've not had a problem yet. I'm not saying I won't but wear is wear at the end of the day.

And while I understand the importance I also understand that in colder weather conditions the flaps help get more heat to the cabin because their outlet is blocked thus forcin more air up the heat exchanger.
