  1. Looks like it has been apart before, assuming convex washer was on correctly. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

  2. There's a chap that advertises in Hayburner that referbs them for about £350. New bits and machining, not used the service just seen the advert.

  3. Are you missing a bearing? That "convex washer" looks like a bearing race.

  4. Nah , if I remember the conical washer sits above the race and holds it down ??
I may be wrong though... its been a while.

Just took my spare steering box apart after reading a few threads…looks like one small step in the bush of the adjuster plate… is that acceptable wear ?

The wear is acceptable if you can adjust the steering box properly and it stays adjusted. You have what appears to be one slight wear step there, almost certainly perfectly OK.
Each time the adjuster screw is set in a different place, it moves the visible wear point - the step is where the corner of the end of the output shaft rubs. It doesnt look like it has dug deep.

Totally unlike in my horrible picture from early on where it had run out of metal to wear. And the hole where the shaft went into the bushing was worn visibly oval. And when it gets like mine, the bushing in the "nose" of the steering box near the output arm has also worn to allow the shaft to rotate with one end 1mm out of line with the other end- it rattles around if you take off the side cover.

Is this a kit for a late bus and if so I dont seem to have those 2 red items in my box ?...
Also looking for a size of the o-ring in the cover plate if anyone has please...

My guess was 85.2 or so ID with 1.78 section...

  14. It is, although I haven't used it. I'll see what's in it later (if I can find it). Can you not just measure the o-ring? Will be a standard size.

aye gonna take a guess at 88.5 x 1.78 cs and get a few around that...
    bendy little fookers they are

  16. Right, I've had a measure, as best I can.

    Big seal - 38/28/7mm
    Smaller seal - 32/22/7mm

No idea what the red bits are for as I haven't used it. One's an o-ring, one's a fibre washer.

    O-ring - 15/12/2mm
    Washer - 18/12/1mm

In the kit, the big o-ring was just a strip of round section rubber. Cut it to size I assume
    2mm diameter, 350mm long

Can anyone advise if I just use minimal grease on the thrust bearing to hold balls in place ? …

As people use petroleum jelly to help new oil pumps prime I'd happily use that... just a guess.

I just slapped on a bit of the stuff I use on mtb bottom bracket…

I don't know what "mtb" means.
I see it's Teflon grease but don't know whether it dissolves in oil or even if it would matter if it didn't.
Can't see the logical harm either way.
