Brrr. Flippin cold lying under the van in the north wind despite the sunshine.
I've just fitted my £3 bike gear cable to the thermostat/ flaps. Straight on with no messing, the blob fitted fine without having to file it down. It's a bit long, I need to tin the cable somehow to cut it down. Will stainless cable take solder? I might just have to put up with a coil of cable or frayed end.

In other news the bottom of the engine is very, very oily. Might be my home made dipstick tube bellows has split. That's annoying as I sold my viton one.

Had a coolant leak from the radiator..tightened all the hose clamps up, cleaned any excess liquid up.

There is still a drip, which isnt up to much coming from somewhere but its still a drip all the same. I'm wondering if there is a tube damaged.

Worst case I'll pop some rad seal in as I dont want to spend god knows how much on a new radiator / fans etc.

A cable end ferrule keeps it tidy.

The full on advance check can be done by disconnecting and blocking off the vacuum advance at the carburettor and revving it until it stops advancing any more, when it sounds like its going to blow up.. .

The multimeter was probably picking up every ignition pulse. Fiddling with the pickup location may help..

Generally, no stainless doesnt solder easily/at all.
Ferrules crimped on or one male half of an electrical bullet connector crimped on to act as a tidy , or small wire clamps e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/27690272...QOYZ9GYR8i&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Filled and painted over a few nasty bits on the bodywork that had been suffering over the winter.

Replaced the grease nipple on the JK front beam with one that is long enough to get a grease gun over it, they tried to fit a short one with plastic washers, ends up too deep in the box they weld on to hold the pivot.

Remapped the ignition timing a little.

Discovered the aluminium crank pulley is starting to widen its keyway so it rattles at idle. The toothed crank timing wheel is still locked to the crankshaft via the dished washer that presses on the pulley, so it is still OK.
May have been started off when I had an unbalanced fan that was chewing alternator pulleys.
Something new to buy at the Volksworld show.

  11. Checked ignition at 30btdc on the points distributor - all good. Then decided to replace the distributor with a spare electronic (pertronix ignitor) the PO gave me, he mentioned he couldn't time it which struck me as odd. Anyway in it went and timing was fine, more like 30ish btdc at mechanical advance - it seems to bounce between 29-31, is this normal? Took for a motorway test drive and seems fine, hitting the dizzy heights of nearly 65 mph on flat.

Next jobs will be pushrod tube seals as they appear to be leaking, probably as a result of using slightly thinner 15w40 oil. The pushrod tubes themselves are a bit corroded and manky, is it worth replacing them?

Might have meant they could not static time the distributor as the Pertronix needs regular pulses from the magnet ring spinning to switch on the current in the coil.

If you are going to make a thing of hammering around at those dizzy speeds, pack another distributor and clamp pre- timed with working points or module in the bus along with a spanner, for the day the Pertronix gets cooked and messes around..

Started the bus up, let the engine warm and topped the coolant up.

Took all the bedding and cushions out for washing, got some Mr Sheen and dusted, hoovered the carpets and he's ready for a run around the block, bed the new brakes in.

    MOT to follow :D
