  1. Took him for a romp in the rain.

  2. Back to your favorite services Snott's? Be careful I had my picture taken there last week, he was sat on the bridge facing east.....

  3. am i right that the late gauge has an adjuster so you can move the pointer max and min needle positions? Mine works but only ever gets to half way when the tank is full, drops consistently as fuel is used and correctly shows empty when it is.. is it just a case of tweaking the gauge to get it so point to "full"?

Do you only take him there because he matches the neons? o_O

I would check your gauge voltage regulator is providing the correct voltage. If it isn't earthed properly to the gauge pod it might not be. IIRC it should be about 4.3V but you should should check that's correct as my memory is vague... The speedy Jim (RIP) page has/had the details.

  6. Yep.

Don’t fiddle with the gauge. As @Zed says, first check the voltage from the regulator. I’ve got an adjustable one available if you need one.

It should be 5.6v I think and Snotty's replacement gizmo is the DBs.

Ha! I did recommend checking that voltage! Once I had that right my gauge performed perfectly.

  11. Get your trusty meter out and connect it between earth and the terminal on the gauge that isn’t connected to the sender. Turn the ignition on. If you’ve got a zener type regulator, should show a steady 5-6V (approx). If you’ve got the vibrator-style one, the voltage should hop and down. Also as above make sure the back of the instrument pod is earthed.

Fixed the idling issue I’ve been having for the last few weeks and had been quietly ignoring. The screw had fallen out of the pipe blocking off the inlet manifold’s vacuum port. Time for a tighter fitting screw me thinks.

  14. Have a quick measure. Odd fuel gauge readings can be the sender, but nothing’s going to make any sense if the gauge stabiliser isn’t working properly.

It can also be the ignition, as I found out earlier this year.

Thats normal for aftermarket tank senders. You can bend the arm and end stops on the sender for a bit of a difference.
The sender I just bought has a linear resistor wire winding on the resistor in the sender, the older replacement had three different pitches of winding - slow near top of tank, faster as the gauge dropped.
On that one (lasted 90000 miles) there was 100 miles between the top and bottom of the orange sector on the gauge. And it never showed full for more than about 5 miles before going to 3/4..

I disagree (again!). It might be normal if your voltage stabiliser or wiring has problems but I didn't do anything other than fit mine and it reads bob on.

The originals had different windings to take into account the angle of the float rod.

With a uniform winding if you take a litre out of the top or when the fuel is near the bottom and the needle will move further than when half full.
