The thing I don't like about the 1700 is that it's a heavy engine over the 1600 and performance figures are not great compared to the little 1600.

Best engine to me is the 1800. It's on par with the 2000 performance wise but seems a more robust engine.

  2. I wish my 1800 would cruise at 70mph it feels like I am trying to kill it at 60mph :(

  3. im saving up for a 2lt engine and gearbox....so people please look out for me .. nice one

alot bods i talk to like the 1700 when its uprated ....

    peace out

Bearing in mind the exhaust alone costs you £600 now it might be worth it, but as Joker has stated, they tend to be knackered. I've bought quite a few over the years and yet to find just one good head - the seats recede and the valve guides worn out.

But I like them - power at higher revs and they rev to 5400, not 4600 on a T1. This means up to 60mph in 3rd. I camped for years with two 2l T4 engined identical buses - 1973 Westfalia continentals - They'd pull away quicker, but I'd leave them for dust on any hills. One of the "l's had been rebuilt by a drag racer and the other was a new vege. My 1700 was £150 (got lucky that time!

Lord charles - summuts up with yours. - you have the original carbs? Mine crawled up to 55 when I got it, but once the carbs were refurbished it went like a rocket... Fully loaded at 70-75mph it got too hot, but 70 was ok.

Oh one last thing - don't do it malc. Why bother?

  12. Just some advice and take it as you want, but trust me, unless you're really lucky Malc or you know the engine/owner well you'll be buying a £450 engine that will need close to £2k spending on it. I can pretty much guarantee the least you'll need is cam/lifters/bearings/gasket set. That little lot alone will cost close to £500. I've pulled apart 15 of these in the past year - only one had a cam and lifters worth saving. Bearings are an absolute given - if you're not going to fit new bearings for peace of mind when you get it then you best not bother at all. As Z had said, heads will likely need work - mine cost me £180 for very basic head work + cost of new valves. If you go to someone really good like stateside you can treble that for head work. Hell, even an exhaust stud costs a 5er!

    :)

  14. I had a solex progressive on my 1700 and no issues with it at all, no heating up issues etc. I went straight from that to 40mm dells and it made a vast amount of difference

1700 has a shorter throw crank than the 1800/2l so I believe so it's a thrasher. I hrashed mine everywhere and it loved it.
WO code 1700's produce 80bhp if you can find one with it's original guts. That's better than the 2l, though not so torquey.

Joker - I'll shortly be annoying you with a fast lawn mower engine.

  17. race? ;)

The thing is, when is a lawnmower not a lawnmower?. In my opinion anything lower than 1642 ;) is ok for go-carts and ride on mowers...
    :)

Here is a clip of a 1600 type 2 cruise lawnmower race

I guess Z man you'll need a big motor for carting that rain forest about with you...

It won't be as powerful as yours, but it should ******* all over any standard engine with buckets to spare. It will be all new parts so it might not smash itself to pieces for a while. :)

Yes a T4 based one would be better (and twice the price), but after years of T4 engines, I've grown to love the little 'uns and I want my engine to look as standard as possible so has to be a T1 in my year bus.

I don't know about yours, but mine's a rattly windy tin box. I don't want to go faster than 65-70, but I do want to rocket up hills and overtake without a 1/2 mile run-up.

Another thing that sometimes irks me is if the car in front is not going fast enough, but too fast for me to get past.
