  1. Anyone know if I can put a 1.7 engine on a 1.8 gearbox. Long story……..

  2. It will be time to go 0n the rotisserie soon. Never done this before and hopefully I don't destroy the kombi or kill my self. Don't I just need to jack it up heigh enough and then bolt it on to the rotisserie?

Pretty much. It'll scare the life out of you the first time you roll it over, but you'll soon be rolling it over with one hand.
Just take your time and always make sure you're well clear of the van should anything happen.
With the type of jig I had I was able to attach the van to the jig with the height adjustment bar removed, then just jack up the van until it was at the height needed.

It will fit but a 1700 makes it's power further up the rev range and was originally mated with a 3 rib box.

  5. so does this mean it will struggle a bit more and i will need to change gears earlier that with the 1800 engine. I thought the difference would of been not
    noticeable.

  6. will let you know when I do my first roll

1700 and 1800 were both 66mm crank so maybe it would be ok but one wonders why they made the 5-rib box for 1800 but fitted 3 rib/1600 type box for 1700?
You can find the gearing info on the internet and judge for yourself but if I had a 1700 (which I did for 10 years), I'd want the right box. 1700 is a good engine but likes some revs. I've never owned an 1800 so have no driving experience with those.

  8. I dont know. I suppose it should be fine as it is only until my original 1800 get rebuild. This is all a long long way away.

  9. @JamesLey How did you manage to jack yours to the height required for the jig?

With a trolley jack and a pair of axle stands.

  12. good. I have 4 axle stands at about 1/2 m and a trolley jack

  13. looks good so far. I will only have the outer a pilar skin at that height for now and will extend it another time with my ready made skins. the top rail on top of the a-b pillar will need to get extended out to over lap this corner piece I made. The corner piece will need to a filler piece as well to make it as wide as the underside of the gutter but I will do this when I make the piece to finish level with the a pillar skin on the right side of this corner piece. Not finished yet.

  14. fits well. the a-b pillar strengthen will now need extending as i had cut it back because of the rust. It will over lap this corner piece. This corner piece is only spot welded to the lower strengthener an the over lap piece above it witch is the a-b pillar top rail. I still have more cleaning top do in their and may want to sort out the back corner first so i can blow out all the rails before I weld this in.

The back corner is a disaster. When I bought the thing, the corner did not look bad and was not noticeable. moths later, the paint started peeling away and it had only some surface rust so me not being panel beating minded at the time and knowing about rust, took to get it fixed. I paid $1800 and was assured it is perfect and the corner was replaced with new metal and all is good. About 3 months later, I could notice a leak in the back. When I saw this I was gutted. the only good thing i can say is the lower rail is fine and therefore is and I know the d pillar is fine.

  15. will need more of the roof cut out in that corner to replace the top corner rail. What you get when you pay $1800

  16. the middle seam on the a pillar outer skin needs to be even and not on that slight point where I did the weald to join them. Hopefully I can hit it flush so it is one even plane

  17. I jack up the back, put it on standby then when i jack up the front to put on stands the back stands start to tilt so the i jack up the back more to make it stable, the front starts to tilt so I'm not sure. how else to put it on four stands.

I jacked up one end and attached the jig to that end, then repeated the process with the other end.

  19. ok thanks This should work. One last question then, did you have the jig at your full height or did you then raise it up later

There was a bit of playing around when I first attached it as I seem to remember I’d not put it high enough on my first roll attempt.
