Tell me why I shouldn't buy a motorhome?

  1. remember our Bays are classic vehicles with lots of charm and cannot be compared like for like with the modern boxy motorhomes which are usually white and a built box without charm.

I may have mentioned before that a neighbour bought a Peugeot 2014 motorhome in this spring and they have now sold it on. It was a typical white box, well specd, but dull.

Maybe best to keep the classic bay and do an occasional hire of a motorhome and see how the pros and cons work out in reality.

  3. Yeah - who knows....2 small
Children and rolling up to a campsite, popping the roof and cracking open a beer seems a long way off.

We are off to France for 3 weeks on sat so will give us time to see if it is worth carrying on with!

We went camping with people who had one of those massive tents - like 6 metres long with a complete blackout bedroom and loads of space for the kids to mess about in. They even had a bldy wardrobe in there! And a 2foot thick air bed thing.

Got me thinking!! If we have to put up an awning anyway why not just get a massive tent... go in the car, save fuel, get there quicker and have more room.

I love the van, it's in great condition and it's an old friend....but....

  4. That's why I don't have an awning as I'm not putting up a tent when I'm in a camper, pus yeah a tent is an ace idea, great for space and using your own vehicle, but no good for winter camping.

  5. We never used an awning before the kids but now just to get the bed down you have to get 2 massive car seats out the way and a pram - they gotta go somewhere so in an awning they go - kid asleep in van so you gotta have a place to chill or just sit in near Silence and near darkness in the van....

Small campers are great for a couple of people beyond that don't make so much sense.

Not worried about winter camping 'cos I'm not mental!

  6. Not much sense in this country as weather is normally rubbish - if it's sunny and warm it doesn't matter.

Maybe the answer is bog off somewhere sunnier and warmer!!

  7. Its fine, you just pitch up near a pub in the lakes, got loads of winter gear so don't mind at all and nice and cosy in the bus at night with the rain pitter pattering down with a nice whisky and spliff - lovely

  8. Aww mate - I remember those type camping trips - it's the bleeding kids wot spoil it. Can't really hang out in pub all night with 3 yr old and baby!

S'pose as things change we have to find a way that works or forget it until kids have gone and I'm wearing beige slacks with ******* stains down in a Caravan club site complying with 'how to pitch' rules....

Here's our 1988 hymer we sold our bay for, going away Friday for the first night, not that long only 20ft and just over 7ft wide, the space is unbelievable. Don't regret selling the van one bit, although I'm hankering after a Baja beetle

There the best pictures I've got at the minute, been to busy sorting things out in it. Over can bed is massive, easily sleep 3 kids, dinette and long bench turn into king size bed, kitchen and toilet/shower is towards the back and separate, solar panels, speakers throughout, solid, no damp etc, just dated to be honest.

  15. Barry Haynes

Barry Haynes I dance in leopard skin mankini’s

I own a T2 bay window because I love them,it's my 3rd one, if I ever sold it I wouldn't buy a motor home or other make camper, it's a bit like an E type jag enthusiast going out and buying a Mondeo because he can get the family in it, it's a better drive and more reliable, yes maybe it is but it's not an E type

  16. Fair play @Barry Haynes, there are many reasons people buy them

  18. But what if the e type is never used 'cos the he wants to spend time with his family and they don't fit in it?

    Don't want to be like

    - Darling, Do you remember when the kids were little? I have such wonderful memories, it was magical.

    - No, I was in the E Type on my own while you looked after the kids.

  19. We've got 2 kids and with us 2 working later on a night, it just wasn't practical for us to be turning up somewhere then having to set out the awning and all the associated bits, hence the hymer. We looked at more modern ones, but the older hymer seemed to have that little touch of class and character about them, the newer ones just look like white boxes to us.

Child seats are a royal pain in the arse in a bay.
