  2. I totally agree the journey is as important as the destination as is the means of making that journey.
As far as caravans, motorhome and campervans go you pays your money and takes your choice.Personally I love the flexibility of a T2 but can see the downsides aswell. We invested in an air awning to make setting up and leaving site easier and it has helped greatly.
For me the old Hymers you see travelling around Europe are amazing and have a charm all of there own in the same way a T2 does. When travelling on the roads the interaction of other driver Gives a good feeling and adds to the journey.

Motorhome drivers all wave - it's like being a nodding dog sometimes.

Go for it. Not all motorhomes are that huge in any case. If it needs to double up as daily transport you'd be better with a LWB T5, Renault Trafic type. But if we had the space/cash we'd have a motorhomes. As you say, you park up, wind the awning out, get a Brew on, job done 10 mins tops. This stuff about "it's the journey not the destination", having a motorhome doesn't exclude that kind of thing.

  5. I dream of having a comfortable bed when away.

As a result of Merlin Cats links I had a look and found a motorhome I like the look of, all that space without having to mess about with awnings and the like ... bliss. I think I'll save the money though so I can buy my boat ... like a caravan or motorhome on water

I'm surprised how much I like driving ours tbh. The high driving position is great. You have to be a bit careful not to follow some satnav shortcuts - try to avoid single track roads, but generally just give way if I have any doubts about gap-size.
We choose sites that are within a walk of a pub or town but take our tandem as well. Or catch a bus - it's surprising how much more time we spend exploring a new place when we have taken a bit more trouble to get there.
I haven't banged my head getting in our out, or on a cupboard either :)

  14. You should do what's best for you and your family Dazza/Matt, I find the enjoyment of camping and getting away every weekend far out weighs the brilliance of driving a lovely bay camper, but I do have both I guess :)

I've decided I'm not ready for a motorhome and neither is my bank account...my camper is as basic as it comes and I love it !!
