I appreciate your viewpoint but justice is the application of the rule of law. If those laws and the sanctions that are applied are not working then a re-think is required.
Juvenile rescidivists become adult rescidivists. Certainly not enough attention is given to young offenders to alter their attitudes. Many consider going to Youth Offenders Institutes a badge of honour, with their families and mates visiting them, often bringing in to them banned goods. I feel that a young offender or adult would be “ dissuaded “ from repeating their criminal behaviour if a “ 3 strikes and you’re out” sentencing policy applied. The institutions overseas should be of a high standard, the cost would be significantly less and should be able to fund proper education, training and rehabilitation whilst the sentence is carried out. The current system isn’t working ( never did) , something radical needs to be tried.

There is another school of thinking which asks the question ‘ why do we need prisons?’ They argue prisons in the main protect the wealthy but condemn and suppress the poor and unfortunate. They say as you do prisons become places where crime is expanded and become a merry go round. They argue the real crimes are instigated by the institutions that create prisons and that only a small proportion of state level crime is ever dealt with by imprisonment, whereas they the institutions/ states should be the ones putting in place systems to help people avoid prison, ie better education a better social arena etc!

  3. Same here, just as Llanwern steelworks was on the decline. £25 a week, less £1.50 for three course lunches in the Skill Centre canteen. We were mostly 16, straight out of school, but lots of others were unemployed from heavy industry, came as far as Cornwall to Newport, I think because it was an ultimatum for them - refuse training schemes, no dole.

Just read this and I’m extremely surprised by some on here. I’m thinking that we’re all free to say what we feel or think perhaps. There’s a few that have turned free speech into let’s drag up any old grievances and throw them around and slate anyone with opposing views or thoughts. The big words aren’t really all that clever especially when used to attempt belittlement of others. You can give me a good telling off if you want but I shan’t be responding.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,less than impressed,,,, pack it in please.

I thought it was a pretty well behaved thread all things considered. It’s gone off on a TLB at times but there’s been some good points made, and those at polar opposites are at least engaged!

After 14 years on here being told I use 'big' words on here, possibly people will realise its simply how I write if I'm being serious.

Is ‘ massive ‘ a big word or is it just massive?

  11. I must admit I often have to run off to google to find out what some of the words mean in your posts.
I don’t mind though as I get to expand my knowledge

Read it again. I asked, like Baz said, why don’t they stay in that safe France,I’m on about the ones that came over without their families. you said about the x amount that didn’t come over. But are they coming over later? Or are they the women and children, the families of all the young men husbands and dads? Do you get what I mean? 6A5EA08C-2E63-46D1-907E-50D87AF8CE66.png I had to copy and paste this in the hope that I have explained myself and that you can ‘decipher’ it.

The message you wrote that I quoted made no sense, decipher is precisely the correct word and I had attempted to understand it, and failed.

That’s not my trying to outsmart you, it’s me being accurate.

I’ll have a read through of your point from the other screenshots.

My grammar is terrible, there is little to learn and much to avoid in how I write.

I learnt English through Welsh…I attended Welsh language schools where English was taught like German in an English school…all other subjects were in Welsh. I’d like to think I’m well read, hence the vocabulary ….a large part of my job is writing various things.

Ozzie , I disagree and agree with @Poptop2 . This thread has been very civil, yes people have expressed strong opinions and if there has been rudeness or aggression then I have missed it.
As for big words I never venture on here without my dictionary
Though, for me the technical stuff , I read but it’s a different language ! :)

  20. I did the YTS at 16 and first years wage was £27.50 and second year £35 and i topped it up by washing up at a local hotel at the weekends .It was embarrassing just how low the wages were to the point i never told even my best mates .Out of about 20 that started the course only 3 finished the four year apprenticeship . It was hard but at the same time you just have to get on with and stop whingeing . It very much taught me the value of money . Junior doctors voluntarily signed up for their chosen vocation but have choose to hold the country to ransom which I personally think it is wrong .Especially when you see them on a Jolly singing and dancing on the pickett line while people's treatment and operations are being repeatedly cancelled .
