Still would not have been easy, but I reckon there would have been a plan laid out over a good number of years instead of pretty much immediate closure as Thatcher planned .

It’s disingenuous to not own your own words in these situations.

On a different forum no doubt you might get a lot of people feeling ‘enlightened’ by your ‘wondering’.

The west start wars in these peoples countries for various ‘reasons’ but primarily to feed an arms industry. The poor sods caught in the middle are easily targeted as ‘cowards’ simply because they don’t want to cannon fodder and leave. Imagine being a homosexual man when Trump gave Afghanistan back to the taliban….you think it’s an act of cowardice to avoid being thrown off a tall building? What about your brothers or friends….do you think they’d get a fair hearing?

The west sells phones and the internet to these people, we’ve invented this problem for ourselves.

It’s fixed by stopping unjustified wars and the banks keeping their knees on poor countries throats.

It would help enormously if those easily led stopped acting like they have amazingly original thoughts and kept drawing stupid conclusions.

But the unity that existed with all the miners because they all in the same boat at the same time gave it more impact to get together . Would they have united to the same degree if they closed the pits in various parts of the UK...slowly but surely .
Dow Lea was a Private pit up Notts way i used to pick up coal in my tranny to take home from there , like you would go into a limestone quarry go on the weigh bridge ...that didn't last long because that closed too
Its done now but should be remembered . Two of my uncles were down the pits on Tyne Side and suffered but fortunately found other work .

God wouldn’t it be a boring world if everyone had insight, empathy and intellect, who would we have to hate?

Governments and religious leaders thrive on us not having any of that!

Division, the enemy of the people!

Anywhere there was unity has been eroded slowly. Even pubs are no longer a social area as such, well not down here anyway!

The west could fix the small boat problem, they chose not to.

People should be more critical of what we are fed by millionaire ex bankers like Nigel ‘man of the people’ Farage and his neck tattoos thick lad mates

Yeah, it’s like the Apprentice when they name their teams.

I can just see them laughing at using that word….let’s make ordinary people lives far worse and touch none of the corrupt institutions that cause misery from whom we shamelessly profit. Let’s call it reform so the Daily Mail types fell like they are being heard.

But it’s like Baz said. Why can’t they stay in that nice safe France? It’s a big country with loads of room. Why do the French shuffle them on over here? Don’t they want to help them then? Arnt they ‘Humanitarian’?

The question you should be asking is how many immigrants arrive in France and stay there.

Living in South Leeds and working in Normanton I lived through the strike in an area rich in mining history . After the inevitable crushing of the strike many ex-miners were retrained in local industries and being a printer I knew dozens through work who the government certainly helped get on their feet again . I'm no way a Thatcherite by any stretch of the imagination , her policies crippled the mining communities and villages around where I lived but even the ex-miners I worked with agreed a few years after the dust had settled that something needed to happen as for various reasons they realised there was more to life than going underground but they were expected to follow their dad down t'pit and known nothing else since school . Whilst it was a diabolical injustice by Thatcher some good did eventually come of it in that communities pulled together and through diversifying managed to kick start their local economy moving away from t'pit , offering a proud two fingered salute to Maggie and her cronies .

Apparently 29,437 people arrived across the channel to the UK in 2023.

France issued 320, 000 first time permits in 2023

The UK figure of actual immigration is higher than just the boats however.

I can't comment on other coal fields - but Richard Burton sums up the mining communities in South Wales beautifully

I live at the foot of the Rhondda, around 3 miles from the place that inspired How Green Was My Valley.

Thatcher's legacy up here remains - broken communities, once proud, with little prospects and the worst thing about that is they don't even know it.

  18. There has always been migration immigration emigration conjuring up fear of the unknown and the people that goes with it,
I have more fear of people like Katie Hopkins in this country than people running from war torn countries

    Away from the immigration subject.
“ Headlines “ today are once again about releasing prison inmates a couple of months early as, apparently, prisons will be full by Easter.
This , according to news includes all manner of inmates including those convicted of violent crimes etc.
A mates partners ex, who was a convicted of theft of clients money was handed a 6 year sentence last month. Should he be in prison ? , He certainly needs to repay for his wrongs. He is not however in any way a threat to society and could assist as part of his “ punishment”.
I have long held the view that our prison system is very expensive, bursting at the seams and ,in many cases offers no real punishment. The person I referred to shares “ a unit “ with an en-suite , tv, phone and Wi-Fi with another. I am not saying this is wrong but , is this a system which can be continued.
I am a strong advocate of setting up prisons / detention centres in countries which have the space and available workforce to be able to cope. These would be cheaper, should be subject to strict oversight but would really constitute a deterrent which our current system does not. A miscreant going to a local prison today , with daily visits from family etc is often a “ badge of honour “.
If he/ she was to serve the same sentence ( in proper facilities) in India or Rwanda ? I’m not so sure they would be so keen to accept a second sentence.
I am talking here of recidivists who are serving 2-5 years , repeat offenders for whom incarceration is nothing.
Our current system is outdated , bulging at the seams and needs radical overhaul.
If our government is prepared to send innocent immigrants to Rwanda then …why not send convicted criminals there ?
Radical but things need to change.

Jeez, listen to yourself please. Sending anyone off to another country is barbaric.

I suggest a few of you read Chavs, The Demonisation of the Working Class

The establishment just wants us to pit us against one another to avoid the real problem causers.
