Busily making a web, it's quite a big one and I recognise the web. It's hidden itself now so no pic yet. How the heck did that get there? Are these common in the UK?

there are few species of spider in the UK that look like black widows.....some are just common garden spiders with very dark markings.....false widows are pretty common darn sarf.... http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/life/insects-spiders/false-widow/false-widow-species/index.html they'll all give you a fair old nip, and lots of pain, but none are fatal....
i have found 3 spiders in 2 weeks 3inches wide i nearly had to be worked with , they are getting massive owen nw
