How much Oil do you need for an Oil Change?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by dean_butler, Oct 8, 2013.

  1. The "angle of the dangle" is another well-known engineering term...

  2. "No ill effects"?
I did a similar silly trick by mistake, and noticed the engine oil temp climbing off scale as I went for a test drive, came home slowly, drained the excess out, all temps. and pressures back to normal.
The oil foams if the level's to high.

  4. I believe so. If memory serves me there were several terms of a similar ilk that could be strung together to make up a rhyming aide de memoire. Usualy trotted out for the benefit of juniors when alcohol was flowing in the Wardroom.:D

    I digress...

  5. how much oil ?? its never ending really , soak away drive ?:D

  6. I found I'd put in 4.5 litres and it still hadn't registered on the dipstick, it was precisely then that I knelt on the sump plug.

    We already know it's a type 1 1600 - should be ok then :)

  8. Don't mix it with Tizer! It never works...;)

Also if the sump is too full it will empty itself through the rear air screw system on the crankshaft pulley. You will not have much trouble with rust in the engine bay. Helps if it is already painted gloss black too.
Found out when I used scratch marks on the dipstick temperature sender as the oil level marks. If you push the temperature sender down fast into cold 20W50 and pull it back up straight away, the bulb on the end of the sender pushes the oil down the little pipe around the dipstick and it stays near the bottom mark as you top up.
So you can get another half litre in there.

    Anyone else agree with this?

    @zed Would you go 15w 40 instead?

OK. My mate was going to pick up some Morris Oil today. I have text and told him to go to Halfords instead and get some classic car 15w 40 instead.
Any particular brand people would go for?

Holy shiiiiiiiiiioooooooot I have oil all over my engine bay really seriously. Thought it was due to flywheel oil seal being nackered. I was in the process of arranging with mates getting the engine out.
Maybe its the oil. Come to think of it, its only been happening since this oil. Might be it for sure.

PS @zed please read this with your thoughts. Remember we talked about my oil leaking and maybe the oil seal. Could this poss be the problem instead?

  14. No. Never had any bother with Morris 30. Perhaps I have been lucky.

I think the condition of the engine, tinware, oil cooler etc probably needs assessing if the oil light comes on at the lights? Did they do this when new?

  15. I used to use Morris' very frequently (as it tends to pee out when hot) I think mine runs cooler with a decent multi-grade in it and use 15/40 as a rule. I can recall being precious when needing oil and running around all over the place trying to get some. You can get modern oils anywhere as a rule. I stick to mineral oil from my local car shop!

Yes quite the same. When its oil time Im always rushing around to find some. I think Halfords is good.

Would people go for a 15w 40 or a 20w 50? Any particular brand people would recommend?

  18. I never had any problems using Castrol GTX in my 1600. Currently (due to leakage problems) I'm using cheapo Carlube 20/50 from B&Q in my 2ltr. I think Halfords are expensive for oil.
