I`ve used whatever I could get over the years, GTX being a decent buy .. The key to everything is change it and clean the mesh every year / 3000 miles.....
I was told 15/40 in a good engine 20/50 if a high mileage engine VW say both are ok 30 was recommended before muiltigrade was available if you look in a owners handbook for late models they recommend 15/40
Yes . What can happen, and Comma might well do this, is you buy a base grade of re-processed oil and add the necessary additives to get what you want....you don't do any refining yourself.
The Twinings of the oil world . I daresay they use reclaimed oil, but no bad thing I think. I'm told it's the additives in oil that break down, rather than the oil itself. If they say it conforms to the relevant spec, it's fine. Nice bit of recycling...
Sure is...all our waste lube oil was sold to a re-processor to be cleaned and sold on...not back to us though as the big three had supply contracts. Talking to the rep one time he said absolutley nothing was wasted...the final residue could end up as sewing machine oil or some non specific light oil.
So I ended up getting the Halfords one last night. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._10151_productId_943823_langId_-1_categoryId_
Good work; now you just got to get it in the engine! You'll want a new gasket kit if youre going to remove the sump plate, or a new crush washer if youre just going to use the sump plug.
Hi dean how you doing. You missed a master class at tekenders mate, I had my engine out and stripped down and rebuilt for the Sunday lol. We changed the main crank shaft and fly wheel seals, this sorted my oil leak out. Going on the oil change link you have here I used the blue stuff but now use the Halfords classic 20w-50w oil. It really does the job for my standard 1600 mate. Hope this helps and hope to see you at the next tekenders
Hey man. Glad to here you got your prob sorted. Couldn't see any 20w50 so went for the Halfords 15w40. Sure it will do the job better than the sae 30.
theres a table in the bentley manual gives all the recommended straight and multigrades for different climate temperatures, the oil should be selected for the lowest temperature for engine starting anticipated 10w/40 is recommended for temperatures down to -20C , 20w/50 is for down to -10C. straight 30 is 0C VW started recommending multgrades in 1975
Another vote for Comma 20/50 as it's described as being for the 'older engine' and is only £10.50 at my local factors. The API is I think the same as the similar Halfords grade.
