Like Low Wray there is another National Trust site on Coniston, but not many level pitches. I’ll dig up a link…. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/holidays/hoathwaite-campsite-lake-district You might struggle to find anywhere though with all the staycationing going on. Good luck
Chapel House Farm just quarter of a mile south of Rosthwaite just before a small river bridge on the B5289 south of Keswick about 7 miles . Two pubs both do food in easy walking distance . Basic showers and bogs but clean . No hook up but may well be now as not been for 3 years .
Thinking of National Trust, this is a cracker in Great Langdale. Two classic pubs right by too. Ambleside area https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/holidays/great-langdale-campsite-lake-district
I was there last week - but not camping . They have just put in one space for a Camper van and there wasn't one parked in the space last week and it was fairly busy - just try phoning them to see if that pitch is booked - it is right next to the field where the path is to Ambleside so very handy. When we camped there in 2019 we parked the bus near to the toilet block and close to the grass where the awning was but slept in the bus - see attached photos - no one noticed because we kept the pop top closed but the hotel reception deal with the bookings and the ground staff are too busy .
Turner hall farm in the duddon valley is ace - handy for a brilliant bakery in broughton too. There’s a site with direct lake access at coniston which is also very nice. Fisherground in boot is great for kids - be warned or enthused…
Ok try this- another classic near Derwent Water. You normally just turn up with no booking. But there is a contact at the bottom of the page http://www.hollowsfarm.co.uk/?a=campsites
Thanks everyone especially @Little Nellie I think we now have campsites sorted. Apart from the steam ferry to Ambleside, B Potters house, Bowness and just generally walking, what else can you lot recommend is worth doing/visiting. Is there a better lake to hire canoes from, is there one place that charges less than the others or all pretty much the same.
Zip wire at Honistor slate mines! Not too sure about canoes personally, but you can definitely hire them. Most lakes good for rowing boats, although I think Derwent Water at Keswick is the classic. Grasmere very good too for rowing boats even a zoo near Ambleside is Cars are the Stars motor museum, so famous cars from movies - Either at Keswick or at end of Windermere, you’d have to google it
Castlerigg farm which is opposite Castlerigg hall but higher up with better views is my comfy 'go to' but never been in the school holidays . Also top notch bogs and a veggie pub 3 minutes away - I'm no veggie but scrummy food . You can walk to the stone circle in about 20 minutes across the fields and loads of easy walks - get a map ...
