If you fancy a day at the beach, head to Walney Island near Barrow in Furness. Huge sandy beaches and ideal for kite flying
Just got back from two weeks in Wales, Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire and The Gower. Despite my trepidation beforehand that it would be rammed…. It wasn’t (the parts we went to anyway, busy sometimes but never rammed)
If you are anywhere at all near Grasmere, then a trip to the gingerbread shop is a must. Buy twice as much as you think you want, even if you don't think you like gingerbread - honestly, it won't last long! The tiny little shop adjoins the church yard where William Wordsworth is buried if you fancy paying homage. Top tip - the garden centre does nice value for money lunches if you fancy a bit of free parking too The Lakeland Motor Museum in Backbarrow nr. Ulverston is a good day out, especially if it's raining. It's not the cheapest, but is very good. The cafe is quite nice too iirc If you have kids with you they would probably enjoy a trip to Fell Foot Park at the South end of Windermere, where you can hire rowing boats. The cafe has been known to run low on food on occasions, so eat earlier rather than later if you fancy it
It's been a while since I was up in the lakes. I found the boats on Elsthwaite water a bit wider and less wobbly - think they are designed for fishing from. Just round the corner from Potters house.
OS map. Or use this if you have decent signal https://tidelines.org.uk/seakayak/map/?x=-2&y=54&z=1000
We just followed the footpath signs from the campsite. It was lagging it down, but the new age kids were hanging out in their vans nearby.
OS Landranger's 90 , 89, 96. Covers all ...could be cheaper buying an OS explorer map might cover all the Lakes area .
Get yourself up the west coast, there are a few little. Pop ups on pitch up in the duddon try’s yourself a path lest trodden
They just emailed to say they’ve had a cancellation so we’re in for the majority of our holiday. Cheers
OS map for the area you're in , teach the kids a new skill or maybe yourself . Everyone should be able to read a map and do some basic navigating without a smart phone .... Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
In fairness it’s always busy in school summer hols. We are normally pretty good at avoiding the crowds but a combo of bad weather, a high tide and a schoolboy error ending a short walk in the town saw us fighting through the town at peak ***** o clock.
Don't forget to pop in at Lancaster services on the way up. It's no better than any other, but skillful driving will see a pic of your bus in front of the tower.
Another walk from castlrigg site is castle crag over to ashness bridge then a walk back along the lakeside snd the new boardwalk through the marshy bit into town. Chips in town and the Bus back up to the site if your knackered or walk once rested.
Love Keswick… shop at Booths in town best supermarket ever! (Range of tomatoes is fantastic!) anyway…. Will give a few more things to do at some point but if intending to go for a meal in town then book before you go. Most are booked up weeks in advance. Pizza at Square Orange are my favourite pizzas ever!
Never thought of going to the Lakes for tomatoes !! Always gone for the walking, mountain biking or rock climbing.
