If your stopping near Keswick...... Head up to whinlatter. As well as mountain biking there is a great walk with things to do for the kids. Slides, climbing frames, rope swings etc. Makes the walk of a mile or so much more interesting. There's a cafe there and also benches for your own picnic. Free apart from the parking! Pencil museum if it rains. Steamer boat around Derwent water. Friar's sweet shop in the centre of town. Rowing boats Moorish smoked chilli hummus from Booths (with posh toms) Wondering around the town asking yourself why there are so many walking shops when most visitors never venture near the fells and need the kit they sell. Walk up Skiddaw, Blencathra or both just to prove your not one of the above Brunch at the Filling station cafe. Have fun.
That’s the mind control tower. I always wrap my head in tin foil before filling up. If not I can feel the implant twitching.
In fact there’s no need to prove anything to anyone. Some fantastic low level, and less time consuming walks which can be very rewarding if your not into exceeding your abilities or level of enjoyment lol! If you do want any walks that don’t require you to make a martyr of yourself then loads of books or message me. Can always copy some for you… or books and maps sold all over… again loads in booths lol!
We've had a book of child-friendly Lakeland walks for years and still use it. No need to knock yourself out, it's a holiday (unless scaling peaks is your thing of course). A long stroll around Tarn Hows is about enough for me tbh, and gorgeous to boot
Forgot one gem….. open top bus ride! Ambleside is a good route to take for the scenery and some short stretches of “ interesting” road but but the ride down the borrowdale valley to seatoller is without equal. It’s hard to believe a double decker can drive the route never mind an open top one. It’s not your normal touristy open top bus. Do it on a weekday when it’s quieter if you can. You can always plan a walk in borrowdale or just get the bus back to town but it really is a gem! Upstairs of course! Keep your hands in the bus and scream if you wanna go faster!
L Love these two sites Been on that very bus ride on the open top from Grange back to Keswick, Borrowdale Valley it’s entertaining!
Arrived yesterday at our 1st stop. Didn’t even unpack and went straight for a a walk up catsdell! Amazing walk. On the way to rosthwaite to have a drink and feed the kids we came across a broken down van which had shredded its fan belt. They not long had the van so told them to change fuel lines and directed them to the good folk of tlb
Last time I was at Ambleside it rained the whole time we were there, not so bad if I'd been in the camper but it was moped and tent that time.
Another good site is Threlkeld Hall campsite near Keswick. Lovely views & walks. Pub in the village & bus into Keswick if you don’t want to unhook the awning
Great stretch of river at bottom of site for kids to play in. The famous Ashness Bridge walk is very close. You can walk from end of site up Castle Cragg, very easy and spectacular walk
I looked back, we went there with a 4 year old and a 2 year old in 2002.. Cat Bells (but you have done that already) Windermere Jetty Museum. Electric motor hire boats on Coniston - you can go approximately 1% of Campbells speed ! Steam Yacht Gondola on Coniston - its only 12 years younger than the SS Great Britain. If you have small kids or want to just do "cute" the World of Beatrix Potter in Windermere. Blencathra - some "interesting" footpaths with very steep scrambles, and places to not slide down the couloir.. We did it one time - it was -5 C and the snow cornices were roped off by mountain rescue. Came down the hillside on our backsides braking with ice axes which were useful going up ... Discovering your diesel car has only one functioning glow plug at -5C.. making an appointment for the AA man for the next morning for another tow start.
