Monster engine - i'm going to do it this winter but how? Calling TYPE 4 Guru's

  1. No, I'm going to earn my spurs with a 2056 first. Cost and experience are big factors, so I'll be taking it in stages and learning as I go. I'll probably go up to 2.4 next winter

Ultimately I want to build engines to go in my imports and then make a few for sale as I go along
    :)

  2. Just posted this up elsewhere...

I'm well on the way now to procuring all the bits for my bigger motor. Just a couple of pieces to source, I have a nice new set of 44 IDF on the way and thinking about having an exhaust made up, but, just thinking out loud, as i've seen Kennedy Stage 1,2,3 clutches on offer recently. This comes with a pressure plate, I guess the clutch friction plate is as standard, but do I need it? Will be looking at the 105 - 120bhp mark for output
    :)

  3. You'll do fine with an original one.

  5. Paul,,does your alarm set off when the word monster engine pops up,,,mine does ;D

  6. oh yes!! :D

need to start thinking about putting some money aside for my 1302s monster engine build... gonna go for a 2270 type 4 turbo

  7. If I wanted to build a monster Type 4 engine, I think I'd start by sending Paul (Weeding) a PM and see how much cash it would take to persuade him to do it for me. If he weren't interested, I'd be prepared to send it to Norway, assuming Holmsen could be persuaded to do it. These two really do know their stuff. ;)

I'm sure Paul would be itching to build you a monster engine - he's addicted doncha-know. :)

You are all mad - what's wrong with 50mph? :-[

  12. Cheers guys :D

monster type 4s cost a fair whack of cash.... just quoted someone £750 for an 86mm stroker type 4 crank... but I would be earning a little bit on the re-sell

A complete turn key 2270 like mine would be in the region of £6.5-£7k, but then a bigger engine would roughly cost the same, as bigger parts cost roughly the same as smaller parts... mad I know

If I got myself a mill and some tooling for case and head machining, then technically I could bring the cost of an engine down as I currently have to pay jo blogs rates to a machine shop

  16. Yep, not interested in a scooby conversion or h2o take that info to another thread - this is about type 4... ;)

    So another question...

Just got some new Keith Black 1911 pistons and barrels on the cheap and some proper good 1800 heads too. Just an acquisition of parts really without considering what to do with them...

So, I'm thinking, I have an 1800 case with crank and rods, get a decent cam, get the heads machined to take the barrels, set of 45mm dells...

Good option? What's it likely to output? I've been trying to read up on all this power stuff but my heads hurting now
    :)

  17. well you won't need to get the heads machined, as the barrels are std outer diameter... they're just taken from 94mm to 96mm

With the 1800 heads I would go to stainless valves and a good port and polish... ideally I'd go bigger valves, 44x38 work really well!! With the right cam and exhaust you should see 100bhp easily... Built a 1911 a while back with 48x40 heads, split duration cam, 4-2-1 exhaust system, 45 dells and that saw 105bhp at the wheels...

  19. Here's a couple of 4-2-1 systems....

This is the 1911 that I mentioned

Cost of head work varies a lot... I've been quoted anything from £12.50 a valve seat to £25  I'm currently keeping an eye out for a mill, so I can tool up and do 90% of machine work in house... but you should budget about £400 for valves, guides, seats, and a P&P

cam I'll have to have a browse of the chart, this is for a van right?

  20. Yes mate, van, wanting a stickers so sub-18 sec...
    :)
