Gave Gusbus a good service today.
    New oil filter
    fresh Comma Classic Oil

Both carburettors have had new seals and new fuel filters fitted as the seals had started leaking of late :)

The oil was certainly ready for changing but it wasn't contaminated by particles or have a silvery sheen to it. Happy motoring!

I ordered a rear rubber mat for the crewcab from Madmatz at the Volksworld show.

It arrived earlier this week and I fitted it this morning.

Well made product that fits really well.

I would recommend it if anyone needs one.

Went to fit a hot start relay but when I undid the nut on the solenoid the Bakelite cracked and started to disintegrate ☹️.

Now it’s held together with a cable tie and some Araldite.
Still works, at least for now.

Decided against continuing at that point...

  5. Tried to fit a new throttle cable with many failed attempts.

I did remove what was left from the old cable.

Fitted nearside lower rear air deflector tin that had fallen off. While I was at it I thought I would take a look at the oil pump and so I took everything off the back of the engine and pulled the pump. It was good but the gasket fell apart. The spare gasket was for a stock pump, not the CB Maxi 3 so I made a new gasket.

Put EVERYTHING back. No oil pressure. Tried taking out oil pressure sender. No oil..
Tried overfilling with oil to get it to prime.. nothing...
CB maxi 3 gaskets go on exactly one way round. I persuaded myself I had fitted it with the outlet covered by the gasket.

All apart again. Nothing wrong. Checked pump going round. Yes it was.
Then proving its a bad idea to use bolts in a VW case, one of the Allen bolts needed to miss the pulley with the thicker pump cover stripped ...
So I had to buy a longer bolt then file down the shoulder of the bolt as it hit the case and shorten it a bit.
Got the cover on and tightened down.

    And it primed...

Then forgot to refit the engine support bar so had to take rear tin off again and refit it.

Its all together now having a beer and bbq..

Back in the day I had to replace the oil pump on a Rover SD1.

If I recall the handbook recommended packing the oil pump with grease or Vaseline (can’t remember which).

I think it was to aid priming the pump on first start up.

Not sure if this is unique to Rover V8’s or is a valid method to aid priming.

    Glad you got it sorted.

I should have used that Vaseline trick.
But of course when I took it apart to look at it, there was oil in the pump body.
Which I think ran back down the outlet pipework into the pump when I loosened the cover and let the air out
And that gave it the seal that made it work again.
Its the 4 metre loop of pipe from pump cover and back again makes it harder to prime, and provides plenty of air locks at low pressure.

The other one that worked before was really over filling it so the oil runs down into the pump.. But I ran out of oil before I could dump in about 2 litres of oil above minimum.

  10. Wrestled one Dellorto off. Put servo take-off on where I should've put it in the first place. Bunged previous hole up rather elegantly.

How did you get that in there so close the thebflange?!

  12. You've got eagle eyes ;)

I almost didn't! Wanted it a high up as poss, as the casting's thickest there. Had to file a small flat on the flange to screw the fitting in.

Now that I've got my rebuilt gearbox back, I gave it a repolish and a couple of coats of lacquer. Found a little flat bit on the nose cone that I couldn't resist giving a proper polish:

PS Distinct lack of gold paint on that ;)...

  18. I got them from VWH. They’ll probably be the same. I got the more expensive German made OEM ones

  19. I find it’s a yearly (if not twice yearly) thing sorting out bits of rust too! My passenger side seems worst but I think it’s partly down to how / where I park it. It seems to hold on to the damp more on that side

That side usually by a wall/fence? (Less air circulating) If I leave a small trailer even, by our wall, the water sits in the render much longer ... IMG_20180417_112408453.jpg
