Timing issues

  1. Cheers Zed, im trying mate :)

  2. Hi, got it ticking over, hissing sound coming from the hot idle valve on the left carb and when you put your finger over to stop it the idle picks up a tad. I've taken it off and the Bentley States this is for autos. Any ideas what I need to do with this? Blank it off?? @zed or others please?

Didn't know the hot idle was autos only, they all seem to have them. Most are broken anyway. You definitely need to stop it leaking but you knew that!

  4. Ok cheers fella, seem to have reduced that issue, now idling at 7-8 btdc. When increasing revs, it's still lumpy with a delay in smooth increase?

  5. Bentley says they are for autos? Just gotta sort this lumpiness now and hopefully that'll sort the acceleration power issues

  6. Just got everything setup, running nicely on idle, took it down the road and there's still no power in gearing. Howard and I are at a loss now, checked valves, timing, adjusted idle on main carb. Then syncs the carbs and had fingers crossed. Absolute bloody nightmare and I can't now help but think that Adrian Wells of Make my Bay has *****ed up my bus totally!

Does the engine seem to be running normally and revving ok, but not pushing the van along? Could the clutch be at fault?

  8. There's just no power mate. I don't know what's wrong with it and Howard was sitting there scratching his head too. Sounded fine on tickover then driving it's just got nothing.

  9. I'm thinking the golf has to go now. Maybe someone out there would be willing to swap a known engine and gearbox for it maybe.

What has the bloke from make my bay said?
    Make this his problem.

  11. Nothing as he hasn't replied to my messages. It's a civil matter so it's not even like I can do anything about it other than throw loads of money away in court.

Maybe another fresh set of eyes before you go to extremes.

  14. Thanks Baysearcher, I've text and rang him enough times so I'll write to him this week and give him a month to sort it or repay me my money. Ideally I'd like the five rib he promised me and my engine running properly. Thing is I don't trust him to do the work so will ask him for the gearbox and some money more likely.

I asked before, but if you got your engine back and it was all your tinware and ancillieries including fan and fan housing, distributer, carbs and everything but a different actual engine, would you know? Do you have a note of the engine number? - not the one on the fan housing, the one on the block.

  16. Yeah but I can't get the bus to anyone mate. That's the issue. When speaking with Howard earlier we said if we can get it running and then to you or say a rolling road then that would be great but we can't even get the flaming thing to go 30 without an issue. The gears are crunching, stick is sloppy like a cheap date, clutch whining like it's not disengaged, sounds like a pre 60's tram when it does move and well I'm physically out of ideas now other than scrap and start again with another box and engine.

  17. It's my engine, I'm sure of it. No number but I'd recognise where I'd serviced and dragged it on the trolley jack mate.

So maybe the gearbox is sooooo shagged it's dragging the whole thing down. How did you get it home? Drive?
Your engine was fine before so it should still be fine now.

  19. I understand where you're coming from with that and we've spoken about taking the whole lot out and checking it over. It was brought back in a trailer but driven off. He didn't have anybody to give him a lift back if he's have driven it here and I was working that day.
Engine was fine when I started taking it apart to paint up the tin etc. I didn't change any settings on the carbs and I'd already marked the timing etc so I knew it was ok.

If the clutch isn't disengaging it'd feel gutless wouldn't it?
