A 009 distributor with a progressive carb is the worst combination you could possibly have - the worst distributor with the worst carb. Neither on its own will work well and combined...
I've just purchased a pair of Weber 34 ICTs from forum member Gooders, and he's done me s beltin' deal. Hopefully with that and the 123 dizzy I'll be sorted
I have dual 34 webers and 009 distributor - and have no flat spots. I’d change to vacuum advance and probably will in the future, but I really don’t have any flat spots
It’s not just flat spots that can be a problem – without a vacuum advance distributor the engine will burn more fuel than necessary and the emissions will be worse than they need to be.
I think I might have made school boy error when fitting the 123 ignition. I've just put the old 009 back on and it's running well again. I had a moment when fitting the plug leads back on (I know a 009 is 90 deg out). I think I could have crossed leads 3 and 4 with the 123 ignition on. Would it have run but with no power, the occasional backfire and sound like it was missing? Oh no what a plonker I am...
If it ran to some extent, likely you’ve just got the plug leads in the wrong order. Did you set the ignition timing properly with the internal LED?
You probably arranged the plug leads neatly radiating from the distributor instead of having two crossing one side. Can blow up a rusty exhaust like that... I dont think the 123 has the design fault of Pertronix/Accuspark/Powerspark that means as you apply power to either the red or black lead it turns on the ignition switching transistor. Which is why crossing the wires over blows up those modules.
Sounds like plug leads then. If you can identify no 1, they go 1-4-3-2 clockwise around the dissy cap.
Sorted it now, I thought something wasn't right when I was moving the leads 90 deg clockwise for the 009. I ended up just taking all the leads off and starting again from number one. The bus is running really well now, and takes off smoothly with just a sniff of throttle despite the crappy progressive carb. The vacuum advance makes a massive difference over the 009... I sound like I know what I'm talking about now ha ha... It's been a learning experience and as basic as checking the timing and fitting a distributor is, it was a first for me... Valve clearances next, expect some ridiculous questions...
Why have a tuneable Bluetooth one and yet do t use it and run the same curve everyone uses ? Cheaper just go buy a SVDA dizzy . The immobiliser function is quite worthwhile tho
Which is why the boggo one is the one to buy, IMHO. But...a stock SVDA doesn't have features like timing advance done electronically and spark balancing (well worth having). I'd regard the "immobiliser" as a liability. If I'm overtaking a truck, I don't want the dissy turning the sparks off because it feels like it.
I will be taking the bus to MAC VW to get the new carbs setup on his rolling road. He will also setup a custom curve for the 123 at the same time. I've never heard of a 123 ignition immobilising itself...
