A compass would have come in handy when I collected timber from huge forests back in the 80’s. You can easily get lost in some of the larger ones and you really didn’t want to take the wrong road in them. I’d get and idea where the main road was and keep an eye on any feature I could for markers back to the main road. No sign posts or way pointers in forests back then.
