OK well fast laptops like PCs are all configured for gamers so I keep ending up with £2-300 video cards in the mix. This is mental, the CPU has graphics that are more than adequate for my needs, I don't need fast refresh Arhhh!!!

Thats why I went off down the route of reasonably expensive, not gaming rated, but good value for money on this laptop. I was literally "burnt" on that previous i7.

According to PassMark, the AMD Ryzen 5 4500 uses 15 watts CPU power and manages a passmark of 11246, while the i7 10700K uses 45 watts CPU power and manages 19649.

Intel has had a lot of trouble this year keeping up any headroom against AMD on processors, they have had serious technology issues, stuck with 2 year old tech.
So at the moment AMD are very competitive. 20201002_193606 (2).jpg
Here it is . Camping at the C&CC Canterbury site.

If I want, I can fold the screen right back and use it as a rather clunky 15 inch touch screen tablet PC.

So... back to laptops. A laptop will be so much easier to live with. Of course the cpu is limited by being a laptop version, but this should do the job?

Thanks to anyone who can be arzed to wade through this. :)

  6. 900 can get you a lot of new laptop. That one is older generation intel https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel Core i7-9750H @ 2.60GHz&id=3425 and its still a gaming laptop. And what exactly does refurbished mean anyway? The last seller on Ebay I asked that of, they cancelled their listing...
Anyway I still recommend AMD 4000 series for better performance for your pound unless you want to build a hackintosh laptop for music work (not recommended unless you've got lots of free time and know what you're doing).

Please do suggest one! If you can find a high power laptop around £1k with 16 DDR4 fast-ish RAM that isn't aimed at gaming, or even the opportunity to specify your own that doesn't start with expensive graphics and cpu soldered into the barebones laptop offered up to build I'll do a dance of happiness like this. :)

On the spec listed up there I do get a choice of that intel processor or the the ARM 4800H for another £3. I swing between, it really does depend where you read as to how these benchmarks pan out in the real world. However with the apparently zero latency double quality audio interface I have my eye on it probably won't matter and my old laptop might even have coped ok or a LOT better than it was.

  9. Just buy a Apple mac air.

They're such poor value for money now that the competition has caught up, they're strictly for mugs. ;)

  11. Maybe if you don't put value on build quality, performance, Mac OSX UX design, quality of service, warranty etc. That's before we start talking about the Marmite-storm that is windows audio drivers.

  14. Personally with phones so blummin powerful and user friendly these days, I would think twice about putting my own money into a laptop, I would rather have a decent desktop and a good phone and/or tablet for when I am on the move. But then again, I work on a PC all day, so I am rather glad to leave it behind whenever I can.

I had more than 25 laptop free days over the summer when camping, if you include weekend days and for more than 20 of those, the laptop wasn't even with me, bliss :)

  16. You save a fortune you don't need microsoft office - microsoft excel- norton virus rubbish because its a Apple Mac
Apple has pages as appose to office and you can export it to word if you have friend that work in the 16th century
Apple has numbers as appose to excel and you can export it to friend that work in the 15th century
Apple does not require virus protection.

John lewis give a 2 year guaranteed £949 or buy a smaller one.

On the basis most people replace there microsoft rubbish every three years it makes a lot of sense.

    Do it your loaded!

  18. And the resale value of a Mac is much higher than an 'equivalent' windows laptop.

I used to work long hours on a computer but it's been a decade at least since I had to do that luckily.
I won't be spending the required £2k for a reasonable mac book, nobody is going to see it and be impressed. ;)
