Windows laptops go in the bin here but they're less hassle to dump than the 3 PCs with 21" CRT screens I had in the office!

  3. You can buy one for £950 your scared

  4. I remember those 21" CRTs. Very good for putting a back out.

  5. Other good think with a apple mac is the usage time is amazing i can use it for 2 weeks without charging it plus you get apple TV but never watched it. Do it Zed, thank me later after six month getting used to it.

But yes I'm familiar, eldest has had a mac booknpro for 10 years, sure they fon't break but it's now 10 years behind the times so is that so great?

  7. @Coda Your so right but he's scared:eek:

  8. I dont understand your logic. It's 10 years old. On what planet would it be 'so great'?
Oh btw yes they do break, just like anything else. The 2010 MBP on my desk has just developed an issue with a black screen. Still, it's 10 years old and trouble free all that time.

  9. I often work off a terminal command line, and sniff my manly armpits . Who doesn't enjoy a good grep now and again?

I'm on a fixed income of £0. Spending a £1k is bad enough! Please desist, I'll be buying shonky windows PC from pcspecialists - at least they don't install all the rubbish "bloatware" the brand names do. I can tick no thanks to all the demo/trial offers and get a laptop just with windows on it which must be a plus.

  12. @zedders Go to a John lewis have a look at one, makes a lot of sense if you have a Iphone too.
when you buy one everything is already on it pages-number-so on no need for a norton virus protection.
all the programs you have to buy for microsoft will set you back £800 in guessing:thinking:

  13. You could buy an Apple Tablet and a keyboard attachment.

I think you chaps may be unfamiliar with both the complexity of software based music and what meets you on the screen. Tablet indeed!

Whoever this is, they would happily have another 3 or 4 screens worth of this stuff in view.

It's gone beyond drum machines. :)

  15. I run Apple Logic, Ableton Live, and BFD3 on a i5 hackintosh with 2x 24" monitors. No tablet for me. Never liked em anyway.

I did consider a smaller laptop with a big monitor but it's more clutter and halfway to buying a desktop? I can still add another screen later but I just about managed with s 15.6" so 17.3" will be luxury!

  17. Depends if you're going to be 'studio bound' or not. My first studio machine was an ibook g4 (2004, still got it), then a PPC mac mini (2005 sold), then I switched to Hackintosh when Apple moved to Intel. Even though I've had plenty of laptops I've never felt the need to take one away from the house to do recording or writing. Of course a laptop can double up for other duties (like sit in the bus checking mugface or whatever it's called). If you don't need that, I'd recommend you build yourself a music focused desktop, you'll get a lot more for your money. And you can get 24" monitors really cheap these days. Hell I'll let you have one of mine cheap, if you haven't decided by the next Techenders :D

I'm not studio bound and won't be.
I also want to keep my power overhead low so I can opperate on solar, LiPo batteries and an inverter. A PC and screen might use 4x as much and we already have one that might have to go.

You do, they go to Apple shops, pay through the nose.

If you watch some Youtube channels like Louis Rossman (an independent Apple repairer, fixes machines Apple refuses to fix ... ) , there are several common faults on Apple computers caused by bad design, trying to squeeze too much in too little space, which result in them dying through component failures.

There are a lot of Apple fans out there who dont want to realise the hardware they are buying is over-hyped.
Like politics in the USA, it has become a religion.

There was a time when Apple hardware was excellent, now its quite ordinary and overpriced.

Consider also if that you want Unix, my Windows 10 machine is actually running Ubuntu as well right now. With a free download.
And I use Libre Office instead of MS office.

The machine you described in the breakdown posted just after my waffle is very good, just its going to be greedy for power.
Using a laptop optimised CPU usually means that when its idling, it should be more economical, at the cost of all-out top speed.

Like the built in battery may struggle for more than a couple of hours with all that hardware.

It will support 2 extra monitors if I understand correctly about the graphics card, so you can get the screen area up quite cheaply.

That class of machine with a slot for a graphics card will always be more upgradeable than something like mine, where RAM , SSD and battery are all you can change.

The price is nowhere in the Apple region for the computer you will get if you buy that machine. Around £1000 is reasonable.

You are not trying to buy a poseurs vanity tool. Just a good workhorse for digital music work.

We have one of those poseur's Dell cast off from a London trading house - huge high-res screens back in 2006 paired with a very pedestrian CPU, so the Manager could have a better looking laptop than the staff below them. Manager gets 1368x800. others get 1024x768..
