  1. Have you checked there's actually +12 on wiring from the column when the switch is in the fast position?

No I haven’t, just pleased that the damn motor didn’t have to come back out.
    Job for tomorrow.

  3. You'll get it working  Have you got the early chunky stalks or the later "slimline" ones?

They look quite dainty… so presumably the later .

lol I'd have said early stylish paddle stalks or later crude square ones. :)

On that basis they’re early … slim, paddle like with a wiper and wash/wipe symbol on end.

Earlier are round steel stalk with plastic paddle on the end, later are all metal.

    Definitely early then.

Finally got in garage to check and there’s no power to the “fast “ position at the steering column.
Having zero knowledge of electrikery, could I run a new wire to switch from an ignition live source, to power fast speed?
Initially thought bridge between the slow and fast wire at the switch, but that’s got to be too easy a fix/bodge hasn’t it?

I had similar situation with "something" from the column and it turned out a spade had slipped inside one of the vw multi connectors so the connector was all together, wires going in both ends, I had to squint through the old cloudy plastic to see one wasn't connected.

Will trace wire/check for continuity ( first time using a multimeter) later.

Assuming there is in fact one of those connectors between the switch and motor you might be able to see it from under the dash and shine a torch through it x-ray style.

Found and checked connector…. have continuity all the way from the wire soldered to the switch all the way down to the motor.
Just seem to be lacking 12v to “fast” on the switch and can’t seem to see a live going to switch.
    Think I need @snotty imput.

    Basic wiring redrawn.
The 12 volt wire for fast and slow is the same wire. So the wires to the switch go .. Fast(black yellow) , permanent 12v (black/grey), slow(black), parking 12v (green)

Unfortunately I’ve only got a blue box with a question mark on it for the wiring diagram…. which sums up my thoughts on electrics!
Based on your info, 12v is getting to the switch, but not to the fast speed part, as everything else works fine.
Assuming that there’s an issue with the actual switch, I’m going to try bridging from slow to fast speed terminals at the switch so there’s 12v for the switch to activate when it moves to the fast position.
    Thanks for your reply.

    Well, that didn’t work.

Me too so I cropped this from a bigger one for you. Pos 2 the black wire to motor should get 12v, pos 3 the black/yellow? I'm no expert but connecting them together isn't the same. You should measure 12 volts on black/yellow and 0v on the black in pos 3. Other way round in position 2. I stand by to be corrected!

Seem to have 12v at everything at both speeds…..frustrated now and come in for a bit of a sulk .

  19. That is odd. Don't want to teach tou to suck eggs, but...how are you measuring it? Should have the -ve lead of your meter connected to "earth" (any handy point on the body of the van) and be probing/poking with the +ve lead. Meter set to say 20V DC range or similar.

Pretty sure I was….. but it’s my 1st time with a multimeter, so I’ll have a play tomorrow…..decided to spray a bit of satin black on the housings, so need to let it dry.
