  1. “Boxmoor 4840” here

Shame they don’t name the exchanges any more. Way back, folk would move heaven and earth (and possibly move house) just to have a Canford Cliffs phone number, rather than those bloody roughnecks in Bournemouth. Bournemouth !

We used to dial numbers by lifting the receiver off hook and then tapping out the number to dial on the hook switch... You tapped it quickly five times then a gap to dial 5 , once for a 1 , nine times for a 9. Basically why 999 is the emergency number- trees shorting out overhead lines found it hard to do exactly 9 shorts on the wire with gaps three times on a row..

  5. You posh lot, we never had a home phone when I was a kid:(
There was a phone box right outside our front garden, if anyone needed to get hold of us urgently they called our upwardly mobile neighbours who had all the fancy mod cons:D

  6. I know that ;)

Seriously, great to see another one getting some use

  9. They're everywhere

Do they breed like Tribbles? ;)

I wish I hadn't got rid of the two that came with my house all those years ago, but BT wanted more to take on the old girl's monthly rental contract than a cheap touch tone phone from Argos cost to buy at the time :(

I think we had to post them back to BT, or something, it was a long time ago.

We didn't get a phone till the late 60's.
My dad refused as he was always on call for any mechanical breakdowns down't pit.
They had to send a van for him if they really needed him.
I remember being shown how to use a public phone when I was about 12, mum had become unexpectedly expecting and I needed to know how to phone for an ambulance.
Young kids now.... don't know they're born...

  15. You should still be able to do this on a rotary dialler - go off hook and dial by tapping the hookswitch, thus defeating your mum’s phone lock

  16. We used to have a party line when we first got a phone. You couldn’t make a call until Mrs Lewis next door had finished jabbering to her bloody sister

A private jet did skim over and a military helicopter at one point..... not quite a Lancaster though.
