Were you tempted to drop the engine and box together ? did it on my type 4 when i bought a 6 rib off Brothernumberone as i had a 3 rib onto my 2 ltr .
Quite nice fitting the box to the engine with out the faff in situ . Only real ball ache is the gearbox upper mounting bolts 2 of best putting those bolts in before you really tighten all the other things leaving you with a bit of free movement and you have to watch you dont damage the gear link coupling, need to push it out of the way .
Also helps to have a bike jack with a big piece of 3/4 ply board bolted on for extra surface area coveridge .

Really ought to sort my gear box out this winter.
Not too much wrong with it but a good professional overhaul would be peace of mind.
Need to find a competent gearbox guru near me before I start dropping the engine though.

    Edit.
Whines a bit and can snatch between 1st and second.

Looked at my records and the gearbox has done 83576 miles since being fitted as a recon back in August 2011. Wrapped it up in several cardboard boxes, booked it with DHL for collection tomorrow, delivery Monday.

Including insurance (valued as unknown secondhand gearbox) came to £56 . And then I discover Bears Motorsport is not far from Victoria Farm.

If getting diesel round here wasnt such a faff I would have driven it up there myself, would have cost about the same but taken about 6 or 7 hours round trip.

When I take both drive shafts and rotate them in the same direction you can hear a clunk from the front of the gearbox..

  5. Hoping to get my spare gearbox to Bears Motorsport (only about 50 miles from me) some time this winter, so I eagerly await updates on this.

Said goodbye to my gearbox, the man from UPS came and took it away and then I started getting emails and texts about its progress towards Hinckley.

Unthreaded the starter motor power cable, cleaned up the crimped end, then soldered it back on. Threaded it back. Discovered a nightmare of oily mess and straw collected behind the wiring loom over the years. (most of the straw was collected on the way to Keiths Field this year, followed a truck of straw bales for about 15 miles down narrow roads where the trees brushed off the straw onto the bus.. ). Got more filth on me from that, compared with taking out the engine.

Spare time over the weekend is to look at fuel sender without cutting a hole above it - it is possible according to the rumours .. lets see. If it all gets too much, out with chopping tools..

  8. Started it for the first time since August. Poor thing hasn't been touched since then. Tried to fire up the diesel heater but the crap rubber join had split so it wee weed on the floor. Re joined pipe and away it went. Bloody hot. Well worth £90.

I'm sure it is fine and only my lack of knowledge and eyesight at fault, but the cam plug looks a bit strange.

Now its pointed out, I think you can see the groove in the case where the ridge on the plug is meant to sit, and the edge of the plug further in.
So it may be pushed in so far the camshaft will hit it.

  13. i have gone out and checked this morning, i ran a bead of dirko sealant in the groove, its all sit fine, albeit looking odd

  14. Is the plug actually seated in the case groove?
