What I don't understand is that my old Astra is not compliant because it's not "Euro 6" but it's really cheap to tax as it has low emissions wheras my mates XK8 is compliant yet the road tax is £695 a year because the emissions are high!

Am I missing something or just thick?

  4. What he has done is very brave and having cleaner air and a improving transport system in London can only be a good thing .Give it time other countries will follow his lead . Now that's done maybe he can concentrate on relocating the Notting Hill carnival to a more suitable venue .

Thanks for agreeing , like all things it will hit people hard but in the long run surely it's worth it ? Classic cars will eventually be targeted for their emissions .Enjoy the cleaner air in Slough

  7. It seems to be sort of tick box lottery where good economic cars but unfortunately diesel powered are deemed unfit for purposes by a bunch of pen pushers yet far older petrol cars are fine . I pootle around in Lady Lastys ex company Beemer which is 2002 , 103k miles and , surprisingly, ULEZ compliant whereas a couple of the know alls at work brought their spanking new diesels over from Poland about 8 years ago and they're having to get rid of perfectly clean good cars . I / we were quite happy to shell out for a decent hybrid when all this came into force but what's the point when a reliable 20 year old car does the job ??

    Bonkers .

Don’t believe it will reduce emissions. They just want to offset the pollution so they can then reopen the expansion of Heathrow plans and then have 700 more planes flying over London. Watch this space!

Mostly I thought the money was going to clawing back the massive subsidies given to TfL to keep going during Covid.. not to keep clean, just stop going under.

  10. I didn't know anyone actually believed Khan's BS.
C'mon, you don't have to dig very far at all to find out what it's really about.

  11. Do not get me wrong I am not a fan Khan as I really think he should be dealing with other things especially knife crime but he may have lots of other motives possibly to his own benefit but taking more cars off the road in London and improving the transport system which he definitely is ! to me is a step in the right direction . Most of the modern diesel i am sure will struggle to carry out DPF regenerations in London , i am forever carrying out forced regeneration on cars that are only pottering around locally in the home counties so surely these modern so called low emissions diesels are having problems and chucking out higher emissions .

Yep, give it a year and the goalposts will be moved and any non hybrid will pay, then another year and the hybrids will pay and then it'll be pay per mile. People need to wake up and smell the coffee.

To state the obvious and not pointed at @Fruitcake's comment in particular, the 'smell of the coffee' is how our society works, nothing is free. Even if the environment stats add up, even if the health stats add up and even if the public transport strategy works, the mayor of London (of all political colours, remember who dreamt up ULEZ) has to get money somehow and they only have control over some levers.

I just hope classic cars don't get too popular as a loop hole and we get clobbered as well.

  14. I do not think they can smell the coffee in London at the minute but give it a few years that could probably tell you which plantation it came from .

Totally agree with that, airlines tanker in fuel if the price is cheaper (i.e. less tax) where they come from, there are lots of perks for flying that means there isn't a fair playing field for all transport modes.

The bottom line is all about how much one wishes to care about the environment , there is going to be a lot of things that will upset the general public ...waiting for the tide of change .
If all of us were really really caring about climate change ...would we have an old classic as a second fun vehicle ?
I have lived all my driving life with old classics ..trucks , vans ,cars , and find it worrying to think it could all change .

Personally i think we should pay some sort of road tax for our classics just for the sake of the ones that want us off the road can't say they give bugger all .
Interesting read this week about classic cars in Bermuda ( a morris Minor van in particular ) in the Classic truck mag ,
It was saying you can drive classics on Sunday , bank Holidays and summer holidays .
I can see something like that introduced ...but i hope not

  18. Well put , the recent governments of ALL parties haven't exactly been averse to replanting goalposts whenever it suits their needs hence running the old beemer until it's absolutely impossible then complying with something more modern.

Or just move away , although I personally think it'll be extended out to the M25 asap.

As for the classic issue , it's only a matter of time before we have to pay like everyone else - I've said this for years and pay-per-mile is in the pipeline.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

My old classic is my only vehicle, it's not a sunny weekend thing though I accept I'm in the minority.
I have a diesel boat with a solid fuel stove, I'm more concerned about that being squeezed towards electric... which is slowly happening with new builds. High revving turbo engines are not really "right" for narrowboats, Electric conversions are for the rich.

At all levels the bottom line is if you're poor you will be priced out of private transport and keeping warm at some point no matter where you live.

One can and does argue the fact that its the everyday car old or new ( leccy cars included ) that are the ones that pollute the most ..classics don't really make much of an impact .
Its a question of wether they just make a start on us just so it looks like they are doing something and not to have so much of a backlash .
The ultra young don't seem to have the same interest in classics ...the teaching in schools of environmental issues probably helps with that .
I can remember a comment that a friend of mine who owns a Sentinal steam truck said There used to be a time when people furiously waved as we steamed and smoked through towns and villages ..Now there is a good chance folks will chuck bricks at us
